Hello
from my little corner of Scotland! Late spring/early summer is here, with warm days and cool nights. Right now everything is blooming, and the highlands are full of color and life.
As usual I’ve been taking tons of photos and videos, which I use as inspiration in the studio, and for sharing in vlogs on my channels.
I love this time of year because everything in nature changes so quickly you can’t help but notice. One day the lambs are barely walking, and then suddenly they look like teenagers. Blossoms arrive and blow away in a matter of days. And the sky stays light until well after 10pm, so I can be out late with my cameras.
Selling my art at the Highland Games
We got a last minute table at the Gordon Castle Highland Games in May, and it was great to be a part of it (and as a bonus we made a profit). Whenever I do a live event, I focus more on the experience of meeting people, and the value of getting my name out there. Brand awareness is important in small communities. I also get to ‘test out’ different products and see what sells. This is extremely valuable and I get to see and hear people’s feedback to what is on the table (or what they wish I was selling). Usually there are special locations that everyone asks about, so I can take that list back to the studio for future paintings.
We only do a few live events each year, but we’ll definitely be signing up for this one against next year. I think highland games are fun events and certainly have a unique set of activities.
New products
We tried out some new note card and notebook designs at the highland games show, and we felt confident enough in their success to offer them on my web shop.
Currently there are limited quantities but we will restock as required. I will also be adding more designs over time.
Oh and my books are still available as well.
What’s Coming Up
In June I’m focusing on finding my joy again. As you’ll read below, I am going through something difficult, and I’m struggling to pick up a paint brush. I have some good days, which allows me to work slowly. But I just need time. Time to breathe. To live. To witness nature. To find myself again.
I’ve been going to monthly meet ups with the Moray Firth Sketchers which is good motivation to get out with fellow plein air enthusiasts (see above painting). This month we are meeting at the Covesea Lighthouse on the 16th. Let’s hope for good weather! You never know on the coast…
July is going to be extremely busy so I feel like June is my month to just breathe and soak in the beauty of early summer. This month, I’m giving myself more ‘me’ time.
Otherwise, we are continuing on our Coastal Journey when we can. And of course in between I’m continuing to make tutorials for my Patreon.
On a Personal Note…
It’s almost excruciating to write this. And many of you already know. But my sweet baby Vader passed away in May. It still hurts to talk about, so instead I will just leave you with one of the last images I took of him when he came out with me for a walk. I love the beautiful tree blooming above him, as he sits and patiently waits for me.
I shared more about this in my recent vlog (along with lots of behind the scenes stuff from May). It’s a bit emotional, but I felt it was necessary to share what’s happening because it’s the main reason I’ve been quiet on social media.
I’m so grateful for the good weather and new growth. Nature helps me more than I can describe.
I appreciate all of your supportive messages and patience.
Take care and see you next time.
